Drug and Alcohol Awareness

This one-day course is designed for specialist drug and alcohol service workers who wish to develop or enhance their knowledge and skills in working with men or women. The course will also be useful to more generic workers who want to improve their practice in relation to drug and alcohol misusers.

The course uses experiential learning methods whilst acknowledging the principles of adult and lifelong learning, providing participants the opportunity to discuss, and where appropriate, practice skill based interventions. Who Should Attend

Youth Workers, Social Workers, Doctors, CPN’s, Health Visitors, Drugs Workers, CARAT Workers, Probation, Police, Resettlement Officers, Managers and anyone who comes into contact with the aforementioned client group.

Learning Objectives

• Increase awareness of own attitudes and feelings towards people with drug and alcohol problems
• Explore how attitudes and feelings can help or hinder working with these groups
• Enhance knowledge of current trends in patterns and levels of drug and alcohol consumption
• Enhance knowledge of psychological/social problems associated with drug and alcohol misuse
• Enhance knowledge of physical problems associated with drug and alcohol misuse
• Enhance knowledge of risks of heavy alcohol and/or drug use in pregnancy
• Enhance knowledge of assessment tools
• Practise use of assessment tools
• Enhance knowledge of treatment options
• Enhance knowledge of barriers to treatment
• Practice thinking about changing an aspect of behaviour
• Enhance knowledge of women with complex needs
• Practise appropriate interventions for drug and alcohol misusers
• Explore needs and means of caring for self and supporting colleagues working with drug and alcohol misusers
