Dual Diagnosis

This workshop is aimed at staff within specialist drug and alcohol services who wish to develop their understanding and skills in working with mental health issues. It will also be relevant to staff in more generic settings who meet drug and alcohol misusers on a regular basis.

  • Understanding terminology used in relation to mental health and dual diagnosis
  • To gain a clear understanding of a treatment framework which encompasses the client’s full range of needs
  • To identify the specific issues affecting the treatment of dual diagnosis clients
  • To practice evidenced based approaches to effective treatment
  • To work within the Department of Health recommended guidelines for dual diagnosis treatment
  • Diagnosis
  • Testing existing knowledge about mental health dual diagnosis
  • Enhancing knowledge about mental health and dual diagnosis
  • Considering the impact of personal and societal attitudes towards mental health and dual diagnosis
  • Suicide risks with client group
  • Non-compliance with drugs
  • Likelihood of violent behaviour
  • Working effectively with mental health services and partner agencies
  • Integrating knowledge of drug and alcohol trends for this group
  • Working effectively with different modalities of treatment
