Motivational Skills Training

This workshop is designed to meet the needs of a wide range of staff who encounter clients with drug or alcohol problems. It is suitable for specialist drug and alcohol service workers as well as relevant partner agencies. The course focuses on the underlying theory and principles of Motivational Interviewing. Participants are given the opportunity to practice a number of the early strategies employed in supporting individuals to make or maintain changes in behaviour. The course also allows participants to look at the use of Motivational Interviewing in the context of practice settings and explore the benefits of a motivational approach to drug and alcohol issues.

Who Should Attend

All practitioners in health, social care, probation, police, drugs, alcohol and mental health settings, this workshop will be of interest to both newcomers and those more familiar with motivational interviewing.

Learning Objectives

  • Understanding of the principles and strategies used in motivational interviewing
  • Understanding the role of motivational interviewing in relation to brief interventions and the Cycle of Change
  • Understanding and utilising the theoretical framework including important concepts
  • Understanding of the principles and strategies used in motivational interviewing
  • Role play
